Weekend preview: Ferrari chasing victory in America, Europe, and Japan
21 August 2025
A busy weekend of racing lies ahead as the 2025 season enters a crucial stage across multiple championships. Prancing Horse cars will be targeting top results, starting with the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, with four Ferraris competing at Virginia International Raceway. The tenth edition of the 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, part of the European Le Mans Cup calendar, will feature seven Ferraris and four official drivers. The same Ardennes circuit will host Ferrari cars and drivers in the Le Mans Cup, with four Prancing Horse entries on the grid.
In Germany, the DTM battle heats up at Sachsenring, where Emil Frey Racing will field three Ferraris. Meanwhile, in Japan, attention shifts to Suzuka for the fifth round of Super GT.
IMSA. Ferrari looks for victory in its third-consecutive IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship event this weekend, and will have four teams aiming for that goal in the GT Challenge at Virginia International Raceway.
Triarsi Competizione won in the GTD class at the recent SportsCar Grand Prix at Road America, while DragonSpeed captured GTD Pro honors in July’s event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
DragonSpeed holds a three-race podium streak in the No. 81 Ferrari 296 GT3 shared by Giacomo Altoe and Albert Costa. The team began their success with a third-place finish at the Six Hours of Watkins Glen, and followed the Mosport triumph by finishing third at Road America.
“To be in title contention for the championship is good, because it’s late in the season and the championship was the target at the beginning of the season,” said Costa, who ranks second in the GTD Pro standings. “But I race to win. It’s my job, and I love the sport. I want to go race-by-race at the moment, enjoying each weekend, and then after the weekend I start thinking about the next race.”
In the GTD category, owner/driver Onofrio Triarsi alongside Kenton Koch took the No. 021 Ferrari of Central Florida / David SW / Rubicon Technical Services Ferrari 296 GT3 to its first victory at Road America. Triarsi qualified third and ran in contention throughout his opening stint. Koch worked his way to the front, taking the class lead with an aggressive pass with eight minutes remaining.
Koch is also the defending GTD winner at VIR.
Ferrari factory driver Daniel Serra and Manny Franco return in Conquest Racing’s No. 34 Ferrari 296 GT3 – coming off a third-place finish at Road America, after the duo gained the podium position with only four laps remaining.
Inception Racing looks to rebound in the No. 70 Ferrari for Brendan Iribe and Frederik Schandorff. The pair led Ferrari’s GTD entry at Mosport, finishing sixth following a second-place result at Watkins Glen. However, the team retired early at Road America.
The most recent VIR triumph for Ferrari was an overall and GTLM victory for Risi Competizione in 2014’s United SportsCar Championship debut, driven by Giancarlo Fisichella and Pierre Kaffer.
Round 9 of the WeatherTech Championship opens with a 90-minute practice session on Friday, August 22, at 3:05 p.m. (all times ET). Saturday includes a second 90-minute practice at 10:35 a.m. followed by GTD qualifying at 4:55 p.m. and GTD Pro qualifying at 5:20 p.m. The two-hour, 40-minute race begins at 2:10 p.m. on Sunday, August 24.
ELMS. The second half of the season kicks off with round four of the continental series at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit. The packed entry list – 44 cars from various series featuring a total of 129 drivers – includes seven 296 LMGT3s from Maranello in the GT3 class. Much of the focus will be on the number 55 Spirit of Race Ferrari of Matt Griffin, Duncan Cameron and David Perel, who lead the overall standings on 39 points after a run of consistent results. The number 51 AF Corse Ferrari sits fourth in the standings, just seven points off the lead, with official driver Davide Rigon joined by Charles-Henri Samani and Conrad Laursen. The winners of the Le Castellet round, official driver Lilou Wadoux with Riccardo Agostini and Custodio Toledo in the number 50 Richard Mille AF Corse car, are just one point further back.
Kessel Racing will field two unchanged crews: the number 74 with Andrew Gilbert, Fran Rueda, and Ferrari official driver Miguel Molina, and the number 57 with James Calado, Takeshi Kimura, and Ben Tuck.
Completing the Ferrari contingent are the number 66 JMW Motorsport entry with Italy’s Gianmaria Bruni, Scott Noble, and Jason Hart, and the number 86 GR Racing car driven by Michael Wainwright, Riccardo Pera, and Tom Fleming.
The GT3 qualifying session is on Saturday, 23 August at 12.30 p.m., with the race starting on Sunday, 24 August at 1 p.m.
Le Mans Cup. After a two-month break, the series resumes with the fourth round of the season at Spa-Francorchamps. In the GT3 class, four Maranello cars will be on track. The number 51 AF Corse entry leads the championship standings thanks to a strong result at Le Mans, where Alessandro Cozzi and Eliseo Donno took a podium in Race-1. Kessel Racing will enter two Ferrari 296 GT3s: the number 33 for Murat Ruhi Çuhadaroğlu and David Cleto Fumanelli, and the number 17 for Lorenzo Ferdinando Innocenti and Andrea Belicchi.
Qualifying is on Saturday at 12.25 p.m., with the race later that day at 3.55 p.m.
DTM. The championship reaches a crucial stage with its sixth round at the Sachsenring, featuring two races. On the 3,645-metre German circuit, Jack Aitken lines up second in the standings, eight points behind the leader. The Briton won last year’s race in Saxony at the wheel of the number 14 Emil Frey Racing Ferrari 296 GT3. Ben Green will also race for the Swiss team in the number 10 car, alongside Thierry Vermeulen in the number 69.
Qualifying for Race 1 is on Saturday, the 23rd at 9.10 a.m., with the 60-minute race starting at 1.30 p.m. On Sunday, the 24th, qualifying takes place at 9.20 a.m., followed by Race 2 at 1.30 p.m., again over one hour.
Super GT. The fifth of eight rounds in the Japanese series takes place at Suzuka, returning to the classic 300 km format instead of the sprint distance used at Fuji last month. The driver line-ups of the two Ferrari 296 GT3s entered for the event remain the same. Kei Cozzolino and Takuro Shinohara will race the number 45 Ponos Racing Ferrari, while Yoshiaki Katayama and Roberto Merhi Muntan will share the number 6 Velorex entry.
The programme features qualifying on Saturday 23 August at 3.15 p.m., followed by the race on Sunday 24 August at 3.30 p.m. over a distance of 300 kilometres.
All times are local.
