Weekend preview: 43 Ferraris on track worldwide in search of glory

This weekend, a large and competitive Ferrari contingent will race on some of the world’s most iconic circuits – from the Nürburgring to Suzuka, from Spielberg to Mugello – in a programme that will see several championships reach their final stages while others enter their crucial phases. From the Intercontinental GT Challenge in Japan to the DTM in Austria, and from ELMS and the Le Mans Cup at Silverstone to NLS and the Italian GT Championship at Scarperia, no fewer than 43 Prancing Horse cars will hit the track between Saturday and Sunday.
Intercontinental GT Challenge: This year, the Japanese Summer Endurance Race returns to the Intercontinental GT Challenge with the 1000 km of Suzuka. Five Ferraris will line up on the grid, with a mix of Bronze and Pro Am crews from the GT World Challenge Asia and the Japan Cup. In the Pro Am category, the number 60 LM Corsa Ferrari will include former Formula 1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella alongside Japanese drivers Kei Nakanishi and Shigekazu Wakisaka. The number 45 Ponos Racing Ferrari, recently victorious in the Japan Cup at Okayama with Yorikatsu Tsujiko and Kei Cozzolino, will be joined by Yusuke Yamasaki.
In the Bronze class, car number 21 296 GT3, the “Ramen Rocket” of Harmony Racing, named for its distinctive livery, will be shared by Dustin Blattner and Dennis Marschall, along with Italian driver Lorenzo Patrese. The number 555 Maezawa Racing Ferrari will feature official driver Thomas Neubauer alongside Naoki Yokomizo and Yusaku Maezawa. The number 98 K-Tunes Racing Ferrari will line up with Daisuke Yamawaki, Shinichi Takagi, and Sean Walkinshaw.
The programme includes pre-qualifying at 10:45 a.m., followed by three qualifying sessions from 5:05 p.m. On Sunday, the 14th, the 1000 km race will start at 12:50 p.m. and is scheduled to finish at 7:20 p.m.
ELMS. Seven Ferraris will compete in the GT3 class of the 4 Hours of Silverstone. Two teams will enjoy home advantage at the British round: the number 86 Ferrari of GR Racing will feature Tom Fleming and Michael Wainwright alongside Italian driver Riccardo Pera, while the number 66 JMW Motorsport entry will see Americans Scott Noble and Jason Hart joined by Gianmaria Bruni.
Ferrari’s strongest title hopes rest with Richard Mille AF Corse and the number 50, crewed by official driver Lilou Wadoux, along with Riccardo Agostini and Custodio Toledo, who currently sit third in the overall standings, just five points behind the leader. The number 51 AF Corse entry of official driver Davide Rigon, plus Charles-Henry Samani and Conrad Laursen, sits one point further back. The Spirit of Race number 55 will line up with Duncan Cameron, David Perel and Matthew Griffin.
Kessel Racing will field two cars: the number 57 Ferrari 296 LMGT3 in the classic Car Guy livery, with official driver Daniel Serra of Brazil alongside Takeshi Kimura and Ben Tuck, and the number 74, featuring official driver Miguel Molina partnered by Andrew Gilbert and fellow Spaniard Fran Rueda.
Qualifying for the LMGT3 class will be held on Saturday, 13 September at 3:20 p.m., with the 4-hour race set to kick off on Sunday, 14 at 1 p.m.
NLS. A double-header weekend awaits in the championship at the Nürburgring’s “Green Hell”, with two four-hour races scheduled for Saturday, 13th and Sunday, 14th. The number 21 Ferrari 296 GT3 of Frikadelli Racing will be back on the grid for Race 2 on Sunday, marking its return to the Nordschleife in the SP9 class, a year after its last appearance. “I will try to drive the entire four-hour race alone,” said team boss Klaus Abbelen, adding: “For next season, we are planning a top-level driver line-up and participation in the key events of the calendar, including several NLS races.”
This year’s 65th ADAC ACAS Cup on Saturday – organised by AC Altkreis Schwelm, celebrating its centenary – will follow the same programme as Sunday’s 64th ADAC Reinoldus Endurance Race. Qualifying runs from 8:30 to 10 a.m., with the race starting at 12 noon on both days.
Le Mans Cup. The championship will make its first visit to the British Silverstone circuit. Ferrari heads into the penultimate round of the series with three cars occupying the top three positions in the standings. After finishing second at Spa-Francorchamps in the number 51 AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3, Alessandro Cozzi and Eliseo Donno hold an eight-point lead over the two Kessel Racing Ferraris. Turkish driver Murat Ruhi Çuhadaroglu and his Italian teammate David Cleto Fumanelli claimed their second win of the season, moving up to second in the standings on 60 points in the number 33 Kessel Racing Ferrari. Meanwhile, the number 17 Kessel Racing Ferrari of Lorenzo Innocenti and Andrea Belicchi sits third on 55 points.
The number 23 296 GT3 of Spanish outfit Biogas Motorsport, crewed by Josep Mayola Comedira and Marc Carol Ibarra, completes the Maranello contingent.
Japan Cup. Coinciding with the 1000 km of Suzuka, the third round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge, the final round of the Japan Cup will also take place on the iconic Japanese circuit, where the season’s titles will be decided. Teams entered in the Japan Cup are also eligible to compete in the Intercontinental GT Challenge race; they include three Ferrari 296 GT3s. The number 9 BINGO Racing with LM Corsa Ferrari, driven by Shinji Takei and Ukyo Sasahara, arrives at Suzuka fresh from a Race-1 win at Okayama and currently holds second place in the standings. Fresh from victory in the previous round, the number 45 PONOS Racing Ferrari of Kei Cozzolino and Yorikatsu Tsujiko remains mathematically in the hunt for the title.
In the GT3 Am class, the number 1 Team MACCHINA car of Tadao Uematsu and Hirokazu Suzuki clinched the class championship at Okayama, claiming a second consecutive title for Uematsu after last year’s win.
Two additional Prancing Horse cars will also line up in the Pro-Am class: the number 18 TODA Racing Ferrari with AKITA and Takashi Kobayashi at the wheel, and the number 555 MAEZAWA RACING entry – the third Ferrari also competing in the Intercontinental GT Challenge – driven by Yusaku Maezawa and Naoki Yokomizo.
The programme includes two qualifying sessions on Saturday, 13 September, from 9 a.m., with Race-1 scheduled for 1:55 p.m. over one hour. On Sunday, Race-2 will start at 9 a.m. as the prelude to the Intercontinental GT Challenge, again lasting 60 minutes.
CIGT. The season finale takes place this weekend at Mugello circuit, where 12 drivers’ and teams’ titles are up for grabs, with the championships still open in both GT3 and GT Cup.
In the GT3 overall standings, two AF Corse entries start from second and third place: the number 62 of Leonardo Colavita, Ibrahim Badawi and David Vidales, 19 points behind the leader, and the number 51 of Lorenzo Ferrari, Mahaveer Raghunathan and Riccardo Ponzio, 22 points adrift. Luigi Coluccio, Leonardo Gorini and Carlo Tamburini in the number 98 Easy Race car are also firmly in the title contest. The trio lead the Pro Am standings with a three-point margin over Colavita–Badawi–Vidales, while Ferrari–Raghunathan–Ponzio sit fourth, six points behind the leaders.
In the Am class, Edoardo Borelli and Christoph Ulrich lie second, six points off the top, joined for the occasion by Simon Mann in the number 50 AF Corse entry. Meanwhile, Jason Ambrose, David McDonald, and Francesco Castellacci are third, nine points behind, in the number 83 AF Corse car. The Ferrari contingent also features the number 93 AF Corse 296 GT3, driven by Oscar Ryndziewicz and Giacomo Altoè; the number 74 296 GT3 of Rossocorsa with Stefano Marazzi and Samuele Buttarelli; and the number 3 488 GT3 of Pellin Racing with Paolo Ruberti and Terjie Haugen – all competing in the Am class.
Eight titles are at stake in GT Cup. In Division 1 Pro Am, all eyes are on Stefano Gai and Fabrizio Fontana, who top the standings on 80 points with the number 169 AF Corse 296 Challenge, 28 points ahead of their teammates Edoardo Barbolini, Lorenzo Megna, and Vincenzo Scarpetta in the number 151. Fresh from their Mugello victory, Sabatino Di Mare, Filippo Croccolino, and Pio Agoglia, in the number 111 Best Lap 296 Challenge, are also vying for victory. The number 107 AF Corse 296 Challenge of Andreas Bogh-Sorensen and Mikkel Mac, standout performers at Imola, will also take to the track.
In the Am class, Andrea Levy and Ivan David Mari in the number 219 Best Lap 296 Challenge start 27 points behind the leaders. The number 280 Rossocorsa entry will feature Enzo and Christian Potolicchio alongside Angelo Fontana, while Willem van der Vorm and Michele Rugolo will share the number 282 AF Corse car.
In Division 2 Pro Am, Lorenzo Bontempelli, Diego Di Fabio and Vito Postiglione will make a final push in the number 403 Easy Race 488 Challenge. Among the Am contenders, the number 577 Double TT Racing 488 Challenge of Matteo Merulla, Gianmarco Ercoli and Nicholas Risitano tops the standings.
The long Mugello weekend will kick off on Friday with the first two free practice sessions, each lasting one hour, at 11 a.m. and 2.40 p.m. On Saturday morning, the third and final one-hour practice session will run at 9:05 a.m., followed by the three qualifying sessions for each of the two classes, from 2:30 to 4:20 p.m., which will set the grid for the season finale. Sunday will decide the 2025 Italian titles, with the 3 Hours race starting at 2:30 p.m. to bring the Endurance season to a close.
DTM. The championship now moves into its crucial final stages, starting with next weekend’s event at Austria’s Spielberg circuit. With two rounds to go, all is still to play for, with only 28 points separating the top nine drivers. The contenders include Jack Aitken in the number 14 Emil Frey Racing 296 GT3, who currently lies second, just two points behind the leader. “Styria has never been our circuit in the past but this year we want to do better, so that we have a chance in the Hockenheim finale,” said the British driver. Aitken’s teammates, Ben Green in the number 10 Ferrari and Thierry Vermeulen in the number 69, will also line up on the grid.
The programme features two races: the first on Saturday, 13th, at 1:30 p.m., with qualifying at 9:10 a.m., and the second, also lasting 60 minutes, on Sunday, 14th, at 1:30 p.m., with qualifying at 9:15 a.m.
ADAC GT Masters. Two 296 GT3s from the Austrian team Baron Motorsport will make a special appearance at Spielberg, in the penultimate round of the season. “We believe we have everything it takes to win,” said team principal Philipp Baron. “We are looking forward to a well-organised event with a big home crowd.” Home driver Ernst Kirchmayr will share the first of the two Ferraris with Fabrizio Crestani, who also competed at last year’s Austrian round in a Maranello car. Masoud Jaberian and Edoardo Bacci will share the second Ferrari.
The first qualifying session is set for Saturday, 13th, at 8:35 a.m., with Race-1, lasting one hour, starting at 3:05 p.m. The programme will be repeated on Sunday, 14th, with qualifying at 8:15 a.m. and Race-2 at 3:10 p.m.
