Two hours into the 77th edition of the 24 Hours of Spa, the third round of the GT World Challenge Europe - Endurance Cup, the best of the nine Ferraris on track is the number 50 of AF Corse – Francorchamps Motors, holding eighth place with official driver Antonio Fuoco at the wheel, alongside teammates Arthur Leclerc and Eliseo Donno. The race, which started at 4.30 p.m. in 25°C temperatures in the presence of the Belgian royal family, saw the first 120 minutes fragmented by multiple Full Course Yellows called to make the circuit safe again after incidents, contacts and trips into the gravel.
The race proved unlucky for the second car of the Italo-Belgian team, the number 51, despite Vincent Abril’s strong start, which saw him climb from fifth to third. However, a few laps after handing over to official driver Alessio Rovera, the car was forced to return to the pits for a problem to the brake. The intervention fixed the issue, but the crew rejoined in 65th place.
Pro Am. In the Pro Am class, the number 71 Ferrari 296 GT3 of AF Corse lies third with Luis and Mathias Perez-Companc, Stephan Lemeret, and official Prancing Horse driver Miguel Molina, staging a comeback after starting from the back of the grid due to failing to set timed laps in two qualifying sessions because of a technical issue. The other car fielded by the Piacenza-based team, number 70, with Custodio Toledo, Matthew Bell, Blake McDonald and Riccardo Agostini, lost a significant amount of time repairing damage after rear-ending a rival during one of the many Full Course Yellows, while running third in class.
Bronze Cup. In the Bronze class, the number 74 Kessel Racing Ferrari sits second with Dustin Blattner, Conrad Laursen, Dennis Marschall, and Zacharie Robichon. The number 93 of Ziggo Sport Tempesta, with Chris Froggatt, Eddie Cheever III, Jonathan Hui, and Lorenzo Patrese, is fourth. The number 12 Rinaldi Racing entry, crewed by Christian Hook, David Perel, official driver Davide Rigon, and Felipe Fernandez Laser, is eighth, while the number 52 of AF Corse – Francorchamps Motors, with Jef and Louis Machiels, Marcos Siebert, and Tommaso Mosca, is 14th after losing time to a drive-through penalty for causing a collision.
One of the incidents that halted the race involved the number 8 Ferrari 296 GT3 of Kessel Racing, entered in the Bronze class, which was forced to pit for repairs after a collision before rejoining in 16th. The number 8, driven by Nicolò Rosi, Niccolò Schirò, David Fumanelli, and Daniele Di Amato, had earlier served a 2-minute 30-second penalty for an engine change during the Spa weekend.
